Style & Instrumentation
At UPBC, we want to sing “psalms and hymns and spiritual songs” that help “the word of Christ dwell in [us] richly” (Colossians 3:16). There are biblical and beautiful songs that have been written by Christians in the past and the present that accomplish this goal. These songs articulate sound doctrine while also inviting the whole congregation to join in. This is why we aim to sing a mixture of both hymns and contemporary songs. We do this using simple instrumentation that supports congregational singing instead of overpowering it. This simple instrumentation can look different from week to week. One Sunday might have just a couple of vocalists, a guitar and a piano. Other Sundays might add bass, percussion, strings, and/or brass. At the end of the day, our hope is that our church would sing together with thankful hearts to the glory of God alone.
How to Get Involved
Please contact Matt Noble (Matt.Noble@upbchouston.org) if you are interested in serving with UPBC Music. Prior to serving, there will be an informal audition which will include one pre-rehearsed song and one new song. This will help us understand your skill level and find the best way for you to serve our congregation. Please prayerfully consider the questions below before volunteering to serve.
